BACKGROUND While President Obama is boldly claiming "Nuclear Renaissance" and offering enticements of tax dollars to Southern Company to build new reactors at Vogtle in Burke County, Georgia, the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor design that Southern Company is trying to license is in serious trouble with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Westinghouse recently submitted its 18th design revision for the AP1000 and NRC safety experts remain unconvinced that Westinghouse's so-called shield building can protect public health in the event of a serious accident.
Westinghouse previously secured approval for the AP1000 reactor design from the NRC in 1998 but has sharply compromised environmental safety and public health with cost-cutting design changes that are now being challenged by nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen and strongly supported by a corrosion specialist in the report Post Accident AP1000 Containment Leakage: An Unreviewed Safety Issue. Tell the NRC's Advisory Committee for Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) to protect the environment and public health! Send an e-mail TODAY urging the ACRS to conduct a full-scale review of the flawed design of the Westinghouse reactor shield building and other safety issues!
Please read and edit the message below, and send to Dr. Said Abdel-Khalik TODAY!
Your message will be sent straight to the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards with a copy to Edwin Hackett, Executive Secretary of the ACRS.
